Toshu Fukmai studied voice under Yoshinobu Kuribayashi,Director of the Nikikai Opera Association. He completed his graduate studies in voice at the Musashino Academia Musicae in 1997. He currently studies conducting under Kiyomasa Nagase and music theology with Tomiko Kojiba. His debut as an opera singer was in March 1997, when he took the role of Yasuyori in opera production "Shunkan". Since then, he has sang at many recitals domestically, and abroad; including at the Casals Hall and the Tokyo Metropolitan Opera City Concert Hall.

His overseas recitals include performances at the Albert Hall in November 1994, "All the World's a Stage" at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1996, a New Year's Concert in London in 1997, Summer Concert in London in 1998 and Arts on the Edge Concert in Australia in 1998.

In 1999, he led the Alps Choir at an audience with the Pope at the Vatican, where he performed his original compositions and traditional Japanese songs. Recently, in China he participated in the Great Wall concert organized by the Chinese Government's Ministry of Culture. He also performed at the opening of the 5th International Choir Competition where he conducted the orchestra during a performance of a piece he composed.

He has composed works for the piano, orchestral music and he also enjoys playing the violin and the piano. Some of his performances as a singer and conductor have been released on CDs and videos.

March 1998 performance of Kurama Tengu marked for the first time Fukami performing two roles in one performance: he played both the Meiji Emperor and Kurama Tengu.

Fukami studied Peking Opera under Wang Jin Lu at the Chinese School of Theatrical Music
Performances include his October 1999 performance of Saiyuki, and his November 1999 performance of Hong qiao zeng zhu, the July 2000 performance of Kojyo no saikai, the March 2002 performance of Kanjiko, and others.
Fukami also performed in the "Sydney Peking Opera Performance" that took place at the Sydney Opera House in February 2003.
In China, Fukami is ranked as a Grade 2 National Peking Opera Actor (December 2002).
He is a regular member of the Chinese National Opera Company, a regular member of the Chinese Beijing Peking Opera Troupe, a visiting member of the Chinese Heilongjiang Peking Opera Troupe, Director of the Mei Lanfang Foundation, and Chairman of the Chinese Heilongjiang Peking Opera Troupe Promotional Association.

Toshu Fukami first studied Noh at Doshisha University's Hoshokai Noh Society under Nihei Kashiwabara and Takashi Tatsumi. Not only was he interested in Noh itself, but also in the instruments used by the Noh orchestra. He began studying the Morita-ryu style of Japanese flute under.
Yoshitsugu Sadamitsu, Hiroyuki Terai, and Masaki Hoashi, the Issoryu style of flute under Jiro Fujita, and the Kohryu style of the Japanese traditional small drum under Shingo Koh.

His first Noh stage performance was in the play "Tsurukame" in 1972.
In 1996, he performed his first major role in a Noh play, "Shojo,"
followed by eRan' in 2000
and "Shakkyo (Renjishi)" in 2001
and "okina" in 2002.

Toshu Fukami has contributed greatly to the dissemination of Noh both in Japan and overseas. He has conducted Noh performance tours in the United Kingdom, China, and in NYC, at places such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the United Nations. Last year, he organized an unprecedented Noh programme in Egypt staged in front of the Sphinx, in which he performed as a Noh lead for the 26th time. He is a teacher of Noh at the Hosho School , and leads the Toshu Hoshokai Noh troupe.

Music concerts
Toshu Fukami was born in 1951 in Japanfs Hyogo Prefecture. He attended the prestigious Doshisha University where he received a
degree in economics. Fukami then went on to study with the Master Class at Musashino Academia Musicae where he graduated with a major in vocal music. Fukami also completed studies at the Western Australian Edith Cowan University Western Austrakian Academy of Performing Arts with a Masters Gedree.

Fukami has composed a wide range of music, from piano pieces to pops and orchestral music. He has given violin performances, piano
impromptus, and also plays Noh flutes. Fukami has conducted on over 30 separate occasions, including leading the English Chamber
Music Ensemble, the Carnegie Hall Orchestra, the Royal Albert Hall Orchestra, and Japanfs City Orchestra.

In 2001, Fukamifs design piece was chosen for second place among 5000 entries at a contest held by the Japan Designers Association.

He held a fashion show in Tokyo in 2002. He is a Board member of Japan Cultural Designers Association.

Arts,Ink painting
Toshu Fukami is a painter with a broad knowledge of various styles of painting. He has studied Japanese style painting(Nihonga) under Yausmichi Inukai, oil painting under Matsushita and ink painting(Suibokuga) under Bakushu Yasunaga.

Last year, two of Fukami's oil paintings were chosen and printed in the Complete Collection of Selected Art Works for the Year 2000, published by Yubido Publishing, Japan. He also entered a clothing design contest held by Japan Designer's Association and came second out of the 5000 entries.

Toshu Fukami started his study of calligraphy at the age of sixteen and currently studies under Seiko Takenaka. Today, he acts as the President of Toshu Calligraphy Research Centre and as Master of Japanese calligraphy.(Shodo)
His calligraphy works are included in publications such as : "Toshu Fukami Art Book" by Kyuryudo Publishing, "Toshu Fukami's World of Japanese Paintings" and "Toshu Fukami's World of Calligraphy" by Tachibana Publishing.


Toshu Fukami is also active as Committee President and adjudicator for Japan's National High School Art Festival.

This is the Pottery which Mr. Toshu Fukami made for "Gabriel angel's Love and Romance Tea Ceremony".

Fukami studied sculpture art under Meisho Arakawa and pottery under Yomi Toki. In 2002, Fukami was certified by the China Arts
Research Institute as a National 1st Grade Artist.

His paintings include "Toshu Fukami A Collection of Paintings", "Paintings by Toshu Fukami" (Kyuryudo Publishing), "Toshu Fukami" The World of Japanese Paintings", "Toshu Fukami" The World of Paintingsh, "TOSHU FUKAMI ART WORKS" (Tachibana Publishing), and others.

 


Flower Arrangement
Toshu Fukami is recognized as a Master of the Saga Goryu
School of Japanese flower arranging. Currently, he continues his studies under Gaoh Mizuno.
In 1999, he produced and directed a stage performance which harmoniously combined three different forms of art; Noh, Ballet and Japanese flower arranging, entitled "An Evening of
Noh-Ballet and Blooming Wisteria". In the same year, he again created a performance in which Ballet and Japanese flower arranging were combined. Last year, he held an art exhibition of paintings and Japanese flower arranging in Tokyo, Japan.

Tea Ceremonny
Toshu Fukami is a Master of the Japanese tea ceremony(Sado) of the Shinryuha school. He began his studies of the tea ceremony at the Ura Senke School when he was twenty, later joined the Japan Tea Association and, since the age of thirty-five, has been a member of the Edo Senke Shinryu School. To add to the traditional tea ceremony that he holds every year, in 2002, he produced a new type of tea ceremony which combines modern art with the tea ceremony.
For the occasion, Toshu Fukami created his own hand made tools which include not only the ceramic bawl(chawan) from which the tea is drank, but also all other tools such as the tea (chashaku), kaki(flower bowl), kakejiku(scrawl), tatami(straw mattress), green tea powder(matcha) and kashi(Japanese sweets).

Haiku

In 2000, Fukami's released his first collection of poetry, Kagerou, and in 2002 he released The Wind Blows Green, a collection of photography and verse. Fukami is president of the Toshu Poetry Society.
